# How to add my own materials

I think the answer is NO. but I want to add plywood material (plywood edge) to my model - its not available. How to add my own materials?

Hi,
At the moment there is no way to add custom materials, however we continuously improve the Visualization feature, so it’s possible that down the road we will reach the point to implement it. Before that, there are still some more fundamental features we would like to add.

Ok. Maybe if you can add a few new materials every month will be good. I wanted to draw construction detail sections thats why I needed things like plywood (as in the edge view of plywood), mdf, end grain of solid timber etc. Suppose I can use colours in the mean time.

Sure why not?
I’m guessing that user defined features haven’t been added yet b/c it presents a portability issue. Where would they reside? On the instance of shapr, made available via cloud, in each model file? What happens if you share it and it’s only part of the shapr instance and not defined in the shared file or shared cloud?
If they do add it I’d recommend a few things:
Make as many materials available in shapr as possible but vastly improve the management (mostly searching/filtering/tagging) of them.
Don’t tie this to the cloud.
If user defined materials are allowed but not available to another user, make sure the user has to specify one of the globally available materials as a secondary option so that visualizing a model without the user defined materials is at least similar (with a way to easily identify the missing ones int he management aspect of the materials.
