Hi,

Firstly thanks for your review. I got the STL meshed file and make it real by 3D printer. right now as a 3D print newbie, I have a no idea which tools shall be used to pattern the whole holes in the face of box, could u give some advice and steps what tools should i use.

There is a pattern tool exist for that. Linear pattern in this case.

thank you, Xdrakosha, How can I use the Linear pattern to make the 4 faces and the corners filled with hole?

This is the easy part. Just draw a sketch with holes. You need to make a couple of them and then just copy with pattern. After that just extrude from the box.

Here a little bit harder because there is no such thing as wrapping in S3D. Only way you can go is projecting holes on a body from sketch (or even sketches) placed by appropriate angle to that rounded corner.

Just a quick test

As you can see projection brings distortion.

But there is always some workarounds. For example you can watch this video.

And also this

A couple of workarounds gives acceptable result

Also, printing round holes is a mess with a 3d printer as it would insert support into every little hole. I would suggest shaping the holes so you don’t need any support.

As a proof of concept. Linear + circular patterns used.

It depends on countless factors such as nozzle diameter, speed, filament, layer thickness, wall thickness, temperature, thickness, hole diameter, et. al. Often you can get away with bridging (holes) with no support. The alternative is of course, a water-soluble filament if you have two nozzles, I find the Verbatim BVOH filament dissolves superior

This is a good STL for testing the limits; there are a lot of them to be found, even better with holes:

Thanks, I’ll try that one. Still, in my opinion, if the hole form doesn’t really matter, it is best to make it a sort of teardrop shape - needs no support and minimal bridging.

Your post was really helpful! I’ve been wanting to print a desktop organizer with PLA recently, and now it looks like I can add some holes.
