I wanted to project a set of patterns on a cylinder. What is the best way to do the projection so the shape and distance of the shapes maintain when on the cylinder?

 ![Screenshot 2025-05-22 162205](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex002/uploads/shapr3d/original/3X/7/f/7fb3c634dd4b193f7ecbd134170cb78c10325fa6.png)

I had no problem with just a column, extrude the part, project the face on the cylinder, then move the bodies, do a circle pattern, lastly subtract from the cylinder.

But with the a few shapes lining side by side, pattern and projection can’t get the result that i wanted.

What you want to achieve is called wrapping, not projecting. Projection working exactly as it should work - it’s projecting. In the same time S3D doesn’t have wrapping function yet, so you have to use workarounds.

Example of such workaround you can see in this video

Just another workaround using circular pattern and align tool 🙂

Thanks for the guide.
I really need to think through how your recomended solution work.

I had a repeated pattern, so definitely had a lot of steps to do.

Square Triangle Circle Square Triangle Circle Square Triangle Circle
Triangle Circle Square Triangle Circle Square Triangle Circle
Circle Square Triangle Circle Square Triangle Circle

something like that.
i guess i just had to do the first 3 column, each columnm at a time then i do a repeat pattern to the 3 columns.

3D modeling involves solving problems with a limited set of tools, much like programming.

That might be why it comes naturally to me, since I’m a software developer. 😃

Hi,
Can you more explicit please ?
Thanks

Nothing new — just another way of using the same old techniques 🙂

- Created a sketch with text and extruded it.
- Created another sketch with a rectangle that fits the size of one letter.
- Used a circular pattern to rotate this sketch around the tube, which gave me placeholders for the letters.
- Used the align tool to position each letter in its place.
- Used the projection tool to project the letters onto the curved surface of the tube.

If you are creating place holders, like what the video showed, just decide how many faces you need, make a polygon, extrude and align to that face.

Shapr could also decide to give us the warp feature.

Interesting variant too. I create my placeholders with pattern tool, it’s easier than it showed on video.

It would be a nice gift!

Hi,
No better for me. For circular shape, simple way.
Sketch Flat Pattern \> Project \> Circular Pattern \> Face offset
