I have looked around on how to do this and I don’t see any guides.

This is simply what I want to make. 2 square rods that slide inside of one another. Also to add a notch in the rod that locks it place and prevents it from sliding out.
Best description is a square telescoping rod with multiple stopping points.

Thanks, that is close to what I am looking for. How would I add notches on the inner part of the 2 sliding pieces so that I can have stop points ever couple inches?

Can you provide a sketch of what you have in mind that is different from what I did?
My notch, on the outer part stops at the bump on the inner part. Actually, you can reverse what I did. Notch the inner and add the bump on the outer.
