Moved from [Looking for Help: Creating a Complete Land Rover Defender Model in Shapr3D](https://discourse.shapr3d.com/t/looking-for-help-creating-a-complete-land-rover-defender-model-in-shapr3d/35106) to a more appropriate category.

As I previously mentioned, this is a project to be completed around 2030. For fun and to challenge myself to do it 100% in Shaper. (My daily work often involves a mix of Fusion, Shaper, FormZ, Blender, and Strata, with works I unfortunately cannot share.)

I started with the frame to get a solid fixture and reference to build from, numerous interesting challenges measuring, often with several laser arrangements. The original master: [https://Hudson41.com](https://Hudson41.com) (or [http://e.pc.cd/5SLy6alK](http://e.pc.cd/5SLy6alK) )

 ![A look at the frame](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex002/uploads/shapr3d/original/3X/2/c/2c66f927ee848d89b570e019709f2a3070ac8d3c.jpeg)

After that, the body, which in Shaper is especially difficult. The result would do for now with some manual grinding at a printout of 1:25,4 but not for a rendering. Later I will try to create a better version, good enough for rendering.

 ![Extern rendering](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex002/uploads/shapr3d/original/3X/1/e/1e624b128c39ee8da1b6a879d0c7a7ba8bed6881.jpeg)

Some part are extremely detailed, as they are some projects in itselfs, as the antenna foot [1941 Original to replika](https://discourse.shapr3d.com/t/1941-original-to-replika/26894) and rear grease cups. (Water pump [New old parts](https://discourse.shapr3d.com/t/new-old-parts/23764))

The engine is completed and final. I will proceed to complete the clockwork by working my way inward after all other components have been completed.

[http://3d.hudson41.com](http://3d.hudson41.com) alternative rendering

 ![Workshop](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex002/uploads/shapr3d/original/3X/7/e/7e96d907fa52ba7c8c0b9b133ca3a4859535578a.jpeg)

The engine is printed at 1:25,4 and 1:10 (for display) with SLA (resolution 35x30x35µm). The frame and body will be FDM.

 ![SLA 1:10](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex002/uploads/shapr3d/original/3X/4/9/49db00b3d1d4d49d126fbaa422d476049b647611.jpeg)

I have stretched the SLA to the limits with the 1:10 in one sole unit. Flat surfaces and gravity work against a good result.

 ![test print 1:10 SLA](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex002/uploads/shapr3d/original/3X/f/8/f8433426573c375302175e4461edf687c4aa94d0.jpeg)

The 1:25 is _really_ tiny and a challenge to paint. Length 2.3in 57mm, resolution 35µm x 30µm

 ![1:25 2.3in 57mm](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex002/uploads/shapr3d/original/3X/8/5/85800ce7ae7ff115c7ffc96f7ffd7d4341cfca7e.jpeg)

Great job! Bravo!
What model Elegoo resin printer do you have?
Love the attention to detail, like the ignition wires, quite fluid.

Wow, this is awesome. Modeling cars is hard, I tried doing it in Shapr3d too - but well I didn‘t really get good results. I really love the engine too, especially all those cables and details on it. Well Done!

Thanks!

I bought an Elegoo Mars 3Pro to finish the [1941 Original to replika](https://discourse.shapr3d.com/t/1941-original-to-replika/26894) My first SLA, so I had no idea of what to look for. I have no complaints about handling or output, and the price was reasonable. Until the “next generation” shows up, I will postpone making an investment in a qualified substitute. My FDM is a modified Ultimaker3, expensive but has worked extremely well over the years.

Btw, the 1:10 takes 12 hours to print. Wash, fix, and release is another 3 hours. So much new to learn with SLA. The support and hollowing are intricate pieces of craftsmanship. Numerous details differ from the basic CAD for a print 1:25 or 1:10.

Exploding the engine to make it easy(er) to paint parts (printing et al. was more of a challenge, could it be done?).

A lot of small changes and adaptions to make the assembly easy and smooth. Some item, as center pins as such, remains.

I abandoned the plans to ease painting by printing parts. The SLA is not rigid enough in the print process to keep the small or thinnest shapes and it makes the assembly to a nightmare.

The test print of 1:10 is now complete. A few smaller components are absent, as is the madman’s link system for the throttle. One last complete 1:10 print left to do.

600 hours on the engine 🤪 Now to continue working on the interior and body.

Gave a 1:24 test print to a friend that obviously instantly broke as it is super fragile. I got the idea of clear epoxy resin. I never played with this. First try (with a cut-off wagon to KIS). Came out quite good. Next will be hanging in a clear string and with a better mix. It will became an indestructible give away!

Some changes from my real gem to true original 41, mostly estimates from photos of wrecks for sale (at Ebay) in US.

- = 6V generator instead of a ‘modern’ ∼ 12V.
- Cold water side hood inlet, instead of the welded replacement, much nicer forms.
- Return spring for the throttle, a more probably design (one of many though).
- Black fan, I painted points yellow that I find esthetically nice (and also keeps my fingers in place).
- Coupe heating regulator (valve), sorely missing.

For the printed ‘large’ engine 1:10 I designed a mold in silicone for the tiny glass petrol filter with an insert of the brass filter. Couldn’t stand blue paint instead of transparence. Using epoxy resin with different size of the filter to compensate for the optical effects of the clear resin. Work in progress…

Good idea!

Impressive result, but somewhat of a struggle to have AI _not_ modify too many details. Missing dog caps :-), extra ornaments (not belonging to the model), etc. The AI fix to the yet-to-be-done body-to-windows fit is spectacular. One thing completely off is the hood ornament; it needs some photoshopping.

Brake, exhaust and fule system left to do. Lots of twist and turns. And then some fine tuning.

Slowly coming together. It is a challenge for the SLA.

Thousands of hours in S3D, and then numerous of hours to make it printable; now for print. The first version is complete, no easy task for the SLA.
(The engine consists of a single, substantial print.)

Parts to print 1:26

In the second version, the frame will be printed in one part instead of two, as it is difficult to make the connection disappear. But this will take 20 hours and will be much more fail-prone.

(OT, my sweet sixteen-year-old assistant got her wings, and I can’t even begin to describe how much I miss her.)
