I am trying to make this cave surface here, but struggling to understand how. I initially thought to make a cube, and then extrude at an angle to carve those inward spaces…but I couldn’t. Then I thought to create some triangles at an angle and the substract (see loom)…but also struggling.

Any suggestion?

You can scale the top of a cube to .001 or make your triangle and move the edge down to nothing using the move tool? The subtract it from the panel?

Assuming that the triangles are solid wood of maybe .75in with 8in squares, you can do the following:

(sorry no images or video, just steps)

- Sketch an isosceles triangle with the long side ~8in.
- Extrude the triangle to .75in
- Create an offset plane with 0 offset on each of the 3 rectangular faces.
- Rotate extrusion 10 degrees in either direction with the gizmo centered on the long rectangular face.
- Select a rectangular face and replace face to the closest of the 3 planes. Do this for each of the rectangular faces.
- Circular Pattern the extrusion qty 3x, 270degrees rotated with the gizmo at the midpoint of the thickness edge at the ~90 degree corner (it’s no longer 90 b/c of the tilt…).

There are other ways to do this but this will likely model the traditional construction.

Looks like it. But how do you match the wood grain?

I had not considered wood grain as I was going by the title request “Trying to model this angled extruded surface…”. and nothing more.

Adding matching wood grain is another topic. One could add wood grain from the Visualization library or import an image and use the decal feature. Either way, you can add/rotate the graphic 90° for each triangle surface. Quite tedious must say.

The other option is to model a separate triangular body, add the visual, then do a circular pattern making four. Then pattern the groups of 4 accordingly. A little tedious, maybe.

Here I imported a ‘pine’ graphic and used it as a decal. Not the prettiest but you get the idea.

I was looking at it like the carpenter I used to be. The grain makes the piece.

I get that and you’re right, the grain makes the piece.

One approach is to model the entire model, sell the idea (make changes if need be) then tidy everything up with the visuals. Many workflows to choose from.

@tommaso.salvatori

Like this ,

When drawing the piece to remove , make sure your drawing at 90 degrees and not on the face of the object or your cut through will be at an angle

As a wood worker i must say i think the furniture is made with veneer and its making a illusion that its angled to the middle

Made many similar furitures

That would be one way to do it. However look at the shadows in the original image. Veneer would be likely but the depressions are not illusion created with veneering IMO.

The method of construction while not practical would look very nice. Look closely at the direction of the light.

Now with modern CNC milling machines this design would be easier to replicate the indentations and the veneer.

Are they going in or out? I thought i was sure they were recessed. But i zoomed in and the they popped out.

Reminded be of being young, my grandmother’s house had artex ceilings and I recall looking up at them in fascination, trying to focus and refocus to see if I could change the view.
