[wip] nes

Hey everyone, wanted to share a work-in-progress project, modeling a NES.

I’m using calipers to take measurements and the precision is down to half a millimeter. It has a more complex shape than you’d think, there is basically not a single right angle anywhere (which of course makes extruding extra challenging) and many details are slanted (I’ve recently learned, to aid in injection molding). All of that has been accounted for in the model.

I’m not really focusing on the inside (at least not for now) but I do take care of doing things in the right order, to sort if mimic the manufacturing process, so the inside looks pretty close to real life, tho it of course lacks structural support, component attachment points etc.

The plan is to model the cartridge insert, all the ports and buttons (so the model can appear complete from the outside, even with the lid open) before starting to fillet edges and thinking about renders and such.

Btw, I had a eureka moment when I realized that extrudes could have a starting offset, I had completely missed that feature. That made it possible to for example model the whole door/lid with only one single profile sketch and a few extrusions.

This project really makes me wish we also had a way to set an extrude angle, where you could pick a face or a plane to dictate the extrude direction. That would have helped immensly.
