Can’t extrude a non planar face

I’m trying to understand the rationale for this limitation:

If I project a rectangle sketch onto a curved body I can perform an offset face operation, ie I can modify the existing body. But I can’t perform an extrude operation to create a fresh body. (Can’t extrude a non planar face). Why not?

You can’t Extrude but you can use Tool > Offset Face

Thanks. Yes, offset face is possible. What I’m curious about is why extrude is not possible.
