If I import a STL I cant highlight it to create a 2d drawing, am I missing something?

no - you are not missing anything - the thing is, that a geometry imported by an STL is no typical solid - so it can not be displayed on a drawing.
If the design of the STL is your own, you may try exporting it as parasolid or STEP - then you may have better luck with creating a drawing.
