I’m trying create something that will hold a dial indicator. The image shows as far as I’ve got. I’m at the point where I need to cut out the space between the parts where the nut and screw would be.

By the looks of your image you were one simple selection away from achieving what you wanted. See it? There are many ways to achieve that same thing.
