History Tree 'invert option'

We can’t do a lot, since reactions to feature requests are basically non-existent. I doubt that anything will happen on this topic for some time.

Another related crosspost

As I work, or is at least aimed at working, organized and also usually export to other systems and renderers, I would benefit from the following. And maybe some other well-structured mind could find it useful.

(Besides a description of items and their purpose I include a code for material as most render machines can search and replace texture/materials in incoming .x_b., this would also benefit export-import of visualized parts in S3D.)

  1. A search of text in items list, preferably high-lightning all matches (and open the parent tree).

  2. A connected possibility to hide/hide others of the matches.

  3. Following ability to select matches in visualization.

To this, a GREP/REGEX search would an extra topping.

(Nag nag; do _not _collapse expanded hierarchy at closing project, and let us use the alt-click (macOS standard) or iOS long-click, to completely open/collapse a tree branch.)

Edit: sorry, wrong thread, but I let it stand…

Yes this would be great ima not sure if some of the UX designteam ever used the software other wise it would be already solved …

Best response on this thread! You clearly know!

Haha that’s great

New things should come FIRST, on the TOP of the list! We shouldn’t be punished for having complex projects that mean we have to constantly change settings in the history tree!

You have to use the history tree to fully utilise tools such as the loft tool when trying to create a swept loft! So why punish us for having complex projects and making us have to scroll past 50 plus history steps to change 1 parameter!!

I bet 100% of new users clicked on the down arrow expecting history list to flip but got a merge history request.

I still do! Trying to manifest it into reality :joy:

If you look at Siemens NX you can change the order, also they have another panel for Variables.

If you ask me they should also let us correctly sort items on the left panel.

To emphasize the point, the object list is already reverse order. Latest object is first in list. This is the opposite to Fusion / Inventor, but actually better.

So…

Please add option to reverse the order of the operations list (or set reverse as default).

Isn’t this just a bandaid? Would your problem be solved if the history tree just automatically scrolled to the bottom of the current history tree?

I believe it to be a question of consistency and user interaction optimization. Displaying an expanded command panel at the same location (top of list, top right corner of screen) each time will save time having to identify it in the history panel and click to expand. It’s a huge time saver. The panel would then automatically contract whenever a new operation is added.

Speaking of saving time, there are a few places where you could make modeling even faster. Since Extrude is probably the most common, here are some potential improvements:

  1. Pressing ‘E’ several times should toggle between one-sided and symmetric extrude, similar to other tools (feels more like an oversight that this doesn’t work)
  2. Selecting a plane intersecting the extrusion normal should identify a target extent
  3. Even though draft angle probably isn’t very common, it could be shown with a text box [ 0° ]

I wrote a long rant in another post and won’t repeat it here, but my inner developer is itching with so many small things that it’s getting difficult to contain.. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: Seriously though, I hope you take any user suggestion as valuable feedback of improvement, even though many of the posts contain some measure of urgency… Keep up the great work!

Hi Emanuel,

Thanks for your response and input on this thread! It’s great to know the Shapr team have seen this issue.

Problem :cross_mark:: New items in the history tree are placed at the bottom of the tree.

Impact :red_exclamation_mark:: Many tools are controlled using settings placed with the history tree. For example, guide curves for a loft between 2 shapes can only be added afterwards, requiring the user to scroll to the bottom of the tree to retrospectively add.

Optimum solution :white_check_mark:: Sort list option, allowing the user to reverse the order of the history tree.

Your suggestion: Would go a long way to improving the workflow efficiency of the history tree. However is greatly imperfect. For example, all history option menus in the tree expand downwards. Therefore, this runs the risk of requiring scrolling anyway to reveal the entire options menu. This would is not an issue if the tree is reversed and new history steps are at the top and expanded downwards. (The newest step on the history tree is usually the most likely to be altered using the history tree).

I hope you understand this and if you have read this or have any further questions I would love it if you replied back. Thanks!

Thanks for your input on this thread. I have read it and it’s absolutely great. You are 100% correct.

I hadn’t even noticed the object list goes one way and the history tree goes the other. This is fairly embarrassing for Shapr as it highlights inconsistency in their design! I believe it is the single biggest issue in the software currently, forget the bugs and how slow it can be, the history tree as it currently stands is a workflow efficiency nightmare!

Again, I believe we share the same views and are thinking of the same solution. I think your suggestion is great.

Sure, give us the history bottom snap, history top snap, let us toggle off the snap, should be what ever the user prefer.

Some might be coming from another software or some might be expecting standard behavior for Mac OS/iPad OS or Windows long list behavior. For this I think more option the better. I too have tons of ways History Organization could be improved, but this would be a good start.

Give the user the options and let them figure out what their preferences are vs one size fits all approach.

Just FYI. Guide lines can be selected before lofting no need to select them afterwards.

In my opinion, the main issue isn’t that new actions are added to the end of the list, but that it keeps scrolling back to the top on its own. As soon as you select any surface, you have to scroll down again.

So how would you like it to behave?

Hi, I’d prefer if you didn’t continue commenting on this thread. I’ve noticed a recurring pattern in your posts where you tend to defend Shapr3D at every turn, often downplaying legitimate frustrations or suggestions from other users. While I understand you’re keen to support the software, this space is for open discussion, including criticism and ideas for improvement. I’m not looking for reassurance that things can be done, I’m looking for discussion around how they could be better. I hope you can respect that.
