Add GD&T Symbol Support for 2D Technical Drawings

The problem that this feature will solve:

Shapr3D currently lacks Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) symbols in 2D technical drawings. GD&T is essential for precise manufacturing, ensuring parts meet design specifications. Without it, I can’t fully define tolerances for form, orientation, and location.

I’m the only one using Shapr3D at my company, and I’d like to make it an official tool. However, the lack of GD&T support limits its usability, forcing me to rely on other software for final detailing.

Brief description of the outcomes that you expect from this feature:

  • Ability to add GD&T symbols (flatness, parallelism, perpendicularity, etc.) to technical drawings.
  • Symbols should be associative with dimensions and datums and follow ISO/ASME standards.
  • A simple workflow for applying and modifying GD&T in 2D drawings.

What can’t you achieve without this feature?

  • I can’t create fully detailed, industry-compliant technical drawings in Shapr3D.
  • My workflow is slowed down as I need to export drawings to other CAD software for GD&T.
  • Without GD&T, Shapr3D can’t be officially adopted by my company for professional use.

Adding this feature would make Shapr3D a more complete tool for engineering and manufacturing.

I agree. Exporting drawings just to add feature control frames breaks the workflow. Hopefully they implement proper datum references and standards compliant GD&T rather than just adding the symbols. Excedify has some good practical resources that explain why both parts matter.

Even if I could just add a feature control frame, some symbols, and datums, I’d be very happy and would probably actually use shapr3d as much as I can. I really think it’s a very lightweight addition. Without simple GD&T it’s hard to convince myself to try and use shapr3d at all.
