Deleting the original body without affecting a copy

Hello,
I have an imported model that I shaped and then later copied. Now I need to remove the original without affecting the copy. I know that I can export and import the modified shape and it will be detached from history. but id like to avoid trying to line up the placement and potentially introducing minute error. I dont fully understand merging history but could that be the way?

I believe if you export it should still retain the location info so when you import it will be placed at the same place.

If not, go to your Private folder and duplicate your project, just in case you need history back.

Merge your history, if you feel everything is good delete the duplicate.

thats the thing. what is merging history exactly. i dont quite grasp how it works.

but thanks for the shout on the location info. I didnt know that. I may try it then.

Merge history deletes all the history of how you made the final model, starting with the sketch.

When you duplicate a model you are essentially creating a new branch in the history tree and all starting from the initial sketch. So when you delete the Sketch you essentially deleted the everything.

Some reported performance issue caused by the long history and one way to solve that is to merge the history and delete all that data.

Merge is like export and import back, when you export it doesn’t record the history.

i think that was what I was confused about when trying it initially. merge isnt selective. it squashes the entire projects history, not individual steps of your choosing. thanks for the clarification.
