Hinge Design optimized for fdm printing

Hi guys,

Can anyone tell me what tolerances I need to consider when designing a hinge for 3D printing? Single extruder so no soluble supports. Too close and the joint will bond. Too far and it’s a crappy joint…

I would try a tight joint and spray with silicone or lithium grease. The hinge should loosen up over a few dozen cycles.

In aircraft if hinges are loose, we can get catastrophic flutter. So we use tight fits, well lubricated, that are exercised to an optimal situation. And we use a soft bearing material as a bushing because two identical materials will often gall or micro-weld.

You might want to consider a nylon hinge bushing.

Best,

Tommy
