How would you create this? Looking for a more elegant way

Hi all,

I’m trying to build a particular shape. It’s a bit like a sherbet saucer kind of shape (2 domes back to back) and the surface of each dome has a soft fluted texture, a bit like a wooden dowel.

I have a video of the piece I’ve made so far, but unable to upload it to here being a new user.

I’ve managed to get reasonably close but with great difficulty and complications along the way.

At first I created the sketch of all the flutes and then projected it onto the 2 dome form I had created. Drawing all the flutes was incredibly time consuming. At first I draw only 1/4 of them and tried to copy and paste the other quarters in but the copy and pasted sections weren’t projecting onto my form.

I’d like each flute to be rounded on each end and finish closer to the edge of the circumference. Rounded like the flute I zoom in on on the video below.

Best wishes

Tim

Very beautiful thank you. I appreciate your help on this.

Could I use the same technique to build a texture more like this… on the ribbed glass photo.

Why not…

Another variant

Used sketch

Then projection and face offset.

Thank you. I just tried creating the sketch but probably going the long way round and not very accurate at all…

Why do you need this kind of sketch?
I showed two different approaches and in both I used pattern tool. Very quick and precise.

I couldn’t think of how to create the shape any other way. I’m sure what you’re saying makes total sense but I’m just not getting it.

You want shape like this?

You can project lines to surface of your lense shape and then make planes at the ends of the lines to draw “cut” shapes onto, then use the sweep tool to carve the lense.

Had a bit of a chuckle.

Request Elegant way, but decides to manually create a circular pattern.

If you want to create it that way you can just use circular pattern, and revolve it and shave the bottom.

Thanks for your help everyone. I wasn’t trying to do it a different way than Alex had explained. I have very little knowledge of shapr3d and was just trying to create what I say in one of his images only with the texture I want.

Thanks again

3 different solutions by 3 different people, including mine, wana see what you come up with since you requested.

Feel like I’m back at school

The elegant way would be using the Circular Pattern tool takes like 2 mins.

You had the right idea.

The must would be to be able to control the pattern without having to do it again.

I think it is currently possible via variables.

Look for the teeth animation, goes from 10 teeth to 100.

Since I just get by with variables, I have lot to learn from that file, I wish I paid more attention in school! I wouldn’t have to eagerly wait for this feature:

yes sure!
