Modeling “gouged” wood texture like a nauguri pattern?

I’d like to model making a heavily textured wooden surface, that you you might create using gouges or even a handheld router on a swinging jig.

You can see the rough, fairly organic shapes in things like these:

I tried an approach of making an overall solid and extruding various gouges into the surface, but this was really wonky and didn’t look great. So I’m tempted to build up a bunch of small components using… loft?

I’m still learning how to make complex forms, this feels like a feature of loft and pattern, but I’m not sure there’s some other approach to consider.

I think I need some more planning to get the right textures.

Paret of me now wonders about workflow, e.g., making a complex pattern in a new project then import it into an existing project.

Not sure if there’s a good way to make things look totally organic, but my instinct of using loft and pattern seems like the right track.
