Pattern flattens folder structure

I have a component with many (~500) objects neatly organized in a folder (with some subfolders). When I make a linear pattern from this folder (7 copies), the resulting object is a single folder with 3500 objects inside, flattened out, and with none of the names I had assigned to things in the original copy. As a result, I really can’t use this feature, unless I am missing something. If not, it seems like something that could be addressed without too much difficulty: duplicating the object (folder) tree for patterns.
