Revolve and cut

Hi everyone,

I have a full circular body, and attached to the bottom of it is a half-circle-shaped body. I also have a separate rectangular body that I’d like to cut using the shape of that half-circle. However, instead of performing a standard linear (horizontal or vertical) extrusion, I want to extrude the half-circle by rotating it—almost like sweeping it around a pivot—to cut through the rectangular body. Is there a way to do this in Shapr3D? Maybe using a revolve cut or some kind of sweep function? Thanks in advance!

Could you maybe sketch what the result should look like?

Even a rough drawing would help a lot to better understand what you’re trying to achieve.

@Xdrakosha Thanks for the reply, Alex. I manually cut the rectangular object in the snapshot that I attached. I want to do it by rotating the circular object, not doing it manually. rather a one-go revolving around an axis which results in the cut that shows in the snapshot. Thanks for help in advance.

Thus you need to cut like this?

If so why do you need to revolve/sweep anything for that?

That can be obviously done by revolving and cutting, but that would be irrational and not in one-go as you say :slight_smile:

Or perhaps I still don’t understand what you’re trying to achieve.

Exactly! I do believe you understand what I want. I made this body as an interlock object for my designs. So it’s like a lock that you just put it inside the hanger and rotate it. Next image gives more information.


Right now, what I do is centering the cutter object inside the to-be-cut body and then subtract two bodies from each other. I’ll do this 3 times, so it covers the whole lock. But I guess there should be some easier way to do this (my guess is to do it with revolve and cut as you mentioned, but I simply don’t know how). I’m a beginner and I really do appreciate any help and guidance you can provide me with! Thank you!

Seems like simple cuts from a single cylinder (from side/top) would be better option not to overcomplicate and you might want to add tolerances to it. It would be easier to add tolerance if you just cut it.

I guess you can also thicken the 2nd piece by face offset and use that to subtract.

I doubt this is the most elegant way, I will think about other variants.
