Hi everyone. I’m new to 3D modeling, but have been 3D printing models created by other for a couple of years and am now wanting to create models myself with most being things to use around the house. I’ve also had some seat time with OnShape, but the Shapr3D interface is much more intuitive - though I do have to pay to be able to export higher quality STLs and 3MFs whereas OnShape allows me to do that for free.
I have a Trinity wire shelving rack that I’m trying to create a clip for that attaches to one of the upright posts that will hold a small switch for a fan. You may be familiar with this type a rack, but each of the 4 upright posts have grooves every inch that the plastic clips that support the shelves locks onto.
I’m continuing to step through the Shapr3D tutorials and other videos, but haven’t found how to do what I want to do. However, I’m to the point where I have created a 1 inch diameter tube with a vertical slit in it that allows me to wrap it around one of the 1 inch posts. I’m using Shapr3D on both a Mac and an iPad.
So far, so good. The problem is that the tube just slides down the post because there is no horizontal ridge on the inside of the tube that would allow it to lock on to one of the grooves in the upright post. I tried using revolve, but it ended up creating a body that wasn’t connected to the cylinder itself and was just floating in space.
How would I go about creating a horizontal ridge on the inside of a hollow cylinder?
I have the design for the piece that will hold the switch for a fan and will ultimately join it together with the part I’m trying to create that will wrap around and lock in to one of the upright posts. The piece I’m trying to create will be about 3 inches tall and 1 inch in diameter.
Here’s an example of a Trinity rack: Trinity wire rack
Does what I’m trying to do make sense?
Thanks for any help you can provide
David
