Unpredictable extrude direction when typing in a value

Is there any way to predict which direction an extrusion will go when you simply type a value in without grabbing one of the arrows?

It seems frustratingly random. Sometimes up, sometimes down? It doesn’t seem to be related to the “Top/Left/Bottom/etc” orientation cube. In fact, I can’t see anything it’s related to.

Uh… dunno. But I do know all you have to do is click it again and hit the “(-)”.
