Latest MacOS, iPadOS, Shapr on both platforms.
Apple Vision Pro 27 b2 and b3
USDZ exports from shapr do not show materials when opened in quick look on the Apple Vision Pro running 27 beta 2 and 3. The USDZ does show materials on the iPad and Mac in quick look/preview so one would think this is an issue with the AVP 27 beta 2 and 3. However, other USDZ files do show materials. So far it’s only the ones exported from Shapr (previous versions and latest version) that do not display the materials. Geometry and colors are fine.
I also tried opening a few shapr usdz exports in Reality Composer Pro, saving to USDZ and viewing in AVP with the same issue.
Is there something odd about the way USDZ files are created by Shapr that would cause this?
Eventually I will check an AVP 26.x to see if there’s an issue. I won’t be able to check quick look on MacOS and IPadOS 27 betas.
Any word on why usdz files don’t render materials on AVP 27b3? Can someone from Shapr3d chime in and at least say “yes we know, it will be fixed” or “it’s apple’s issue and we’ve alerted them” or something to that effect?
I’m starting to panic. Sounds stupid but this is the number one reason why I have the AVP. Having the models in 3d and in color is ok but the material and light rendering on the AVP is what completely it sold it for me.
usdz export is broken with shapr, it needs some bugs ironed out. all my isolated meshes get merged based on their material, and renamed to mesh_0, mesh_1, so on…
i rely on using my models in reality composer pro and i have had to resort to exporting in step, importing into blender using an extension, and texturing there instead. it is so annoying, i hate blender lol
sorry this isnt exactly your issue but im just chiming in on how usdz export is literally broken
Shapr exported usdz materials do not render in:
- AVP 27 (beta 2 thru 8) built in Quick Look app
- Reality Composer Pro 2.x on MacOS 26.6.2
- Reality Composer Pro 3.0 beta on MacOS 26.6.2
They do render in:
- AVP 26.x built in Quick Look app
- MacOS 26.6.2 built in Preview app
- iPadOS 26.6.2 built in Quick Look app
Apple’s example files Quick Look Gallery - Apple Developer all render properly. Normally I’d chalk this up to a beta issue but it seems that Shapr3d is writing materials to usdz in a way that may not be compatible with the next round of OS releases. Is shapr using outdated libraries to do the export?
I rely on the AVP for “realistic” large model rendering and unfortunately updated to the 27 beta. I don’t have a developer strap so I can’t downgrade. It looks like USDZ with materials is going to be broken even when 27 is released. The default materials with color and transparency do work but severely limit the experience of envisioning architectural designs
Just checked on MacOS 27 and Apple Vision Pro 27 official releases by running the latest shapr3d on the Mac, exporting USDZ that has materials, sharing the file to the AVP, and viewing it in quick look. Materials do not work.
Can someone from shapr respond? Is this a known regression that will be fixed shortly?
I think what’s happening here is that there is a newer standard for USDZ that Shapr is not using. Even Apple isn’t consistently using the newer standard. What libraries are being used to export USDZ from Shapr? It’s probably out of date or does not use the latest USDZ standard. For reference, Reality Composer Pro 3 is using the newer standard but some of the renders in the OSes.
Please update the USDZ exporter to properly write USDZ files with the textures mapped to the materials (materials appear to be properly mapped to meshes).
Where Shapr3d USDZ files do not work:
-
AVP 27 built in Quick Look app
-
MacOS Reality Composer Pro 3
Materials are present but the texture files are not properly associated with the material entry. The mesh points to the material entry and the material should point to the texture entry but it doesn’t. Fixing the associations and exporting as USDZ does work)
-
MacOS Preview app
Preview can now handle usdz files with some editing capability. Unfortunately it doesn’t show the texture entries so you can’t remap them to the material entries which are properly associated to the meshes.
Where they do work:
- AVP 26.x built in Quick Look app
- AVP 27.x freeform and keynote page renderers but not he “quick look”
- MacOS 26.x built in Preview app
- iPadOS 26.x built in Quick Look
