I have used Shapr3D for some years, working on a MacBook Pro 15” 16GB. Now I would like to convert to use iPad as my main machine. But I´m in doubt about what I should choose. What type of iPad, Pro or Air? Pen? What size, 11” or 13” Storage capacity etc. From what I experience, in Shapr there is seldom need of large capacity for rendring and so on. I will still use my MacBook Pro as the stationary “hub”. And I use iCloud and have a couple of lace harddisks I can use for storage. I will also use the iPad for Illustrator and some Photoshop. I would be very glad if there someone in the community that can give me some advice.
Hi,
which machine is right for you depends strongly on the kind of models you work on.
I have experience with shapr3D on different machines, an iMac from 2020 with Intel Chip and 64GB memory, an iPad Pro with M2 Chip and I recently switched to a Mac Book wit M4 Pro Chip and 48 GB.
In my experience the difference in performance between the Intel iMac and the M4 Pro was noticeable. The difference between iPad M2 and Mac Book M4 Pro is smaller. Only with large models I have the impression that the Mac Book is loading faster. I can work on both machines very well and don’t often feel a difference in speed.
From what I understand shapr3D depends mainly on the single core performance and the amount of RAM you have.
If you want to work on an iPad I would say a iPad Air should be sufficient, but I would go for the bigger screen, which is more important than speed and performance (working on an iPad)

Adding my 2 cents here. I do all my Shapr3D CAD work on my iPad Pro. My main machine for everything else is my Mac Studio. Still, I prefer modeling on my iPad Pro. If I were you, I would opt for the larger 13” screen and Apple Pencil. Mine is 1 terabyte of storage and I opted for the nano texture screen. The non-glare screen is a real plus. Good luck with whatever you decide.
Thank you Mike. It sounds like I have made the right choice concerning the hardware. But I got the 256GB. I have a stationary MacBook Pro which I can use for storage. Also iCloud and a couple of Lacie hard disks. And I hope it will hold. Is nano texture screen the one with «paper feel»? Sven S.
The nano texture I was referring to IS the iPad screen. I do not have a separate 3rd party screen on my iPad. That feature was only available with the purchase of the 1TB or greater iPad Pro.
