Currently Area selection does not include Sketch.
It would be great if sketch was included in this list.
You have to go to sketch mode of a specific sketch, then do area select. There you can also select f. Ex. Points or lines etc. Or if you want to extrude a lot of sketches at once, you can just press tab until it “faces” is selected and then extrude. Just saying.
