Is there a smarter way to select many faces on a sketch? In the below sketch I want to select all faces so I can extrude them and it is kinda tedious to click every face manually 
Have you tried area selection? You can filter the selection to faces only. It does not help if they can’t be covered by simple rectangle, but in your case it looks from this screenshot that you can.

I just discovered that I can filter the box select on the left in the screen, I knew it!
A magic wand type of selection would be handy. The area selection doesn’t always work well.
