Apparently when a sketch is made on an axis it is grouped together automatically
Is there any way of disabling this?

Hi @RenegadeCitizen Welcome to the Forum.
Sketches are contained on Planes.
If you wish to separate Sketches it is essential to use or create a different Plane.
