Help please with modelling of ergonomic scissor

Hi everybody!

Ive been working with shapr3d for a couple of weeks in connection to my master thesis. Im trying to model a ergonomic scissor with asymmetrical ringholes for the fingers. This is a picture of the side view. So the ring for the right loop goes a bit up to support the ringfinger as well as the left ring going a bit downwards for the thumb (pic 1).

Ive been creating these loops with the help of the loft feature (pic 2). Ive watched a bunch of tutorials and know how important it is to align all the circles exactly on the guide curve. Ive also made a construction line from the middle of the ellipse to the border of it and connected that dot with the guide curve. I know that sounds silly but it always worked for me that way, now all of the sudden it doesnt. Anytime I try to select the 4 profiles i get an error as soon as i select the guide curve. This problem never occured before and Ive deleted and started new atleast 20 times but it just wont work anymore and Im getting kind of helpless since Ive got 2 months left for my entire thesis.

My question is: Is there any other way to create such asymetrical rings to use e.g. for scissors? Or am I making such a obvious mistake that I cant see it ? I’d really appreciate any advice and happy to give out further information if needed to understand my scenario! Hi! I’m still a newbie, so this may not be the best approach, but I would probably model it differently.

Instead of using a Loft, I would:

  • Draw an ellipse (or circle, depending on the shape you want).
  • Offset it to create the inner opening.
  • Extrude it.
  • Add fillets to get the rounded profile.

If the finger ring then needs to be angled or repositioned, I would use the Move/Rotate tool. Place the gizmo’s center on the pivot point and rotate the ring to the desired position.

Just another idea that might be worth trying.

Thank you for your reply, do you maybe know if theres a tutorial on the thing you said “Place the gizmo’s center on the pivot point and rotate the ring to the desired position.” English isnt my first language and I dont exactly understand what you mean with that. Update: I think i understand what you mean, but i cant put the gizmo inside the body, right? So it just rotates the whole thing and not “shape” it in terms of like streching or molding if that makes sense. Am I doing it wrong ?

I made a short video for you. :blush:

This isn’t necessarily the best or only way to model a finger ring—it’s just another approach that might give you some ideas.

In the video I:

  • draw a closed ring shape,

  • create the inner opening with Offset,

  • Extrude it,

  • scale the bottom face slightly to create a tapered shape,

  • show how you can move the gizmo’s center (the white dot) to any pivot point,

  • rotate the bottom face a little,

  • and finally add Fillets to round everything.

For this example I kept the gizmo’s center in the middle, but if you move the white center to another location, the selected geometry will rotate around that new pivot point.

I hope this helps and gives you another way to approach the design!
