Hello. New to shapr coming from other CAD platforms.
I have created a wall that is 3mm thick, and placed a 6mm hole in it. I then want to place an 8mm recess that is 1mm deep over that original 6mm hole. When I create the 8mm circle sketch and then select it, the extrude only grabs the outer donut shaped 8 to 6mm ring, and doesn’t grab the inner 6mm circle. Is there a way to extrude the entire sketch rather than just a single region selection? In this case I have draft in opposite directions so ends up leaving a really thin bit where the 6mm hole is. @Cesar That is what I’m trying to do yes - and I didn’t realise I could just drag that 6mm circle out to 8mm with offset edge - that could be a time saver! I have been drawing a second sketch for the 8mm circle. But…
The big issue comes when you add a draft angle. Because it’s not cutting away a full 8mm circle it leaves behind a bit in the middle due to angles. See the pics below of with and without draft angle. The orange selection only grabs a donut ring and I cannot seem to grab the entire 8mm “full circle”.
Also I realise in this particular case I could always do the 8mm hole first and then the 6mm hole, but I’ve had this same issue on other parts of the sketch and if you’ve already built a 5 or 6 steps before realising you need this extra recess it’s just not time worthy to delete it all and start again. Or maybe you just need to chop away a section. In other CAD packages I’ve used when I draw a sketch and then cut away it cuts the whole sketch, not just what it thinks it should (note I do actually like this smart feature of Shapr3d selecting sub-sections, but how do I select the whole bit?).
I think the key is to complete the entire sketch first, and only start extruding after that.
Create both circles in the sketch: the 6 mm circle and the 8 mm circle. You can use Offset to quickly create the second circle.
Then first extrude the full 8 mm circle to a depth of 1 mm. During the Extrude operation you can also set the Draft Angle. This makes the sides of the extrusion slope inwards or outwards instead of being straight. It’s a very useful Extrude option that is quite easy to overlook!
After creating the 8 mm recess with the desired draft angle, use the 6 mm circle from your original sketch to cut the hole through the wall.
The important difference is that the 6 mm hole hasn’t been cut yet when you make the 8 mm recess. So Shapr3D can work with the full 8 mm circle instead of the donut-shaped area between 6 and 8 mm. This also means the draft is only applied to the outside wall of the recess, which should prevent the thin bit of material you are getting now.
And you don’t have to start all over again. Go to the History panel and find the point where you would otherwise have to start over. Long-press that item and choose Insert Breakpoint.
You can then make the changes you want at that point in the history. When you’re done, remove the breakpoint and the later steps in your history will be applied again.
By the way, I have to give ChatGPT some credit here — it was the one that explained the Draft Angle option to me. I didn’t know about it either!
