Is it possible to have STEP instead of STL for native slicer exports?

Is it possible to allow STEP files instead of STL for native slicer exports like Bambu Studio? Right now I’m seeing that I have to choose a resolution.

Currently I export STEP files and then import them into Bambu Studio. It helps for true geometric precision instead of having to rely on polys.

When you import STEP in Bambu, you are choosing their default High Res setting, it is getting converted to what Bambu considers High Res.

There is a setting you can turn on in Bambu Studio if you have it off. Shows you the Step to Mesh quality settings.

That is debatable.

When you import a step file into Bambu Studio, it does the same thing Shapr does when you export to STL.

I haven’t tested it, but unless the Bambu Import allows for a considerably higher resolution than the shapr export on its highest possible setting, you won’t notice a difference.

With the tolerances an FDM printer can achieve, there’s a point where throwing millions of polygons at it does not improve the print quality any further. Then you’re better off just adjusting the minimal toolpath distances in the slicer. But be careful with that, when you make them too short, you generate so much gcode for such short durations to print, that it can overload your printer’s control electronics and the print will fail.
