New out here - trying to project simple sketch onto a curved surface

Hi there,

I’m using the shapr3d on a window 11 machine. I am having major issues though with the interface and getting pretty frustrated.

I created a curved surface by extruding 2 huge cylinders and to keep a .20" thick body. I am now trying to project a simply sketch onto it and have yet to be successful.

In particular, I am uncertain why I never see a project type → edges option. It only pops out a Link Sketch option. I also have to select an item in the sketch to project, before I can select the projection function. It does not appear in the tools selections before that.

I have successfully projected simply sketches onto flat surfaces, but this curved this is killing me. So far it only allows me to select the source item, but not the target (the curved surface).

Assuming your sketch is within range of the target body to project to, first thing to try is reboot machine then program.

Not sure why you are having troubles but projecting to a cylinder or other non flat surface is standard capability and should not give you trouble. :man_shrugging:

Also maybe try creating plane off the sketch and project to that, then try project to the cylinder?

If it still does not work submit a trouble ticket.

I’ll try to create a simpler sample. My issue was that I cannot see the Sketch to edge option which I think is what is stopping me from selecting the target body. It has no issues with the flat item since it auto selects the proper method.

I feel like I am missing something…I’ve watched countless samples and they allows show the sketch to edge option, but not for me.

So…just got it to work but the visuals were VERY odd. It did not make the target face purple so it was very misleading about there the projection would go. I kept clicking around the source item and it finally projected it onto the surface I needed it on.

I basically created a 600" inner and 600.25" inner circle and extruded that for a huge ring (.25" thick). I then need to project a shape onto the outside surface and remove the rest of the ring and retain a panel (odd shape) that has a slight curve to it (I gather folks call that sheet metal).

Well, I am still failing. Here’s a pic of what I am trying to project. I never see the sketch to edge option, nor can I select anything as a target except the source. Hope the image makes sense. The top item is on a construction plane, which I am trying to project onto the giant ring. The project tool is all I get..I can either link or not link the sketch. but nothing in the way of sketch to edge (unless the version that I am running is not correct).

The face you want to receive the projection, click the little icon and it should turn purple.

Exactly what I was trying to do…the bottom faced is the surface I want the upper projected onto. It never goes magenta.

I did manage to get a projection but once if I selected the plane under the ring (the default origin planes). The projection was flat however and never did follow the curve. I am assuming this is a result of the lack of a sketch to edge project type. Still can’t find that. Unless the process has changed and shapr3d tries to figure that on it’s own. In that case, it’s failing but I am still perplexed that the interface looks quite different than many recent help videos. I’ve only been at this for 2-3 weeks.

In any case, I still cannot select the surface as the target.

Appreciate the input out here but, I have to move on and at the moment giving up on this thing. Been hours of different exercises and tons of videos…they make it all look so easy but it fails for me in 5 steps. Nor sure this would be called a challenging process or not.

PS: I just created a new go-pro mount for a roll-cage pretty quickly and successfully.

If you can share the project. Either that or submit a trouble ticket. :man_shrugging:

OK..thanks…I’ll try to share it..appreciate it.

Wrap & Emboss? (Under More •••)

Worked right off for me.

Export the body as step and or Shapr file. Export it into a new project and try again? Might be a corruption :man_shrugging: ?

I exported the project. Maybe try opening it and see what happens.

Disregard the one above. Try this one below. I didn’t modify the one below.

curvedtailpanel_Exported2.shapr (228.8 KB)

Thanks for the file. I imported it and got the wrap and emboss to work. However to make the panel I had to extrude the surrounding part of the ring, then got the curved panel I needed (so I didn’t use the warp and emboss on that).

I added a few more elements to the part and used warp and emboss to basically extrude a few items. That worked but projection did not. Still trying a few things.

I’ll try more elements with the warp and emboss, but I still have the question, where is the project type (sketch by edges)? That is missing in my tools selection options…why? I must be missing something.

That is a bit of oddness. :man_shrugging:

You didn’t suppress an update?

Can you give the Imprint Edge tool a try?

It did an update a few days ago.

I’ll play with the imprint. The wrap and emboss worked. I finally got the panel I was looking for but from a different direction that I had expected. I’ll be printing the panel curved panel in a few minutes. Looks good. The rest worked as expected.

The one thing I couldn’t also get is I wanted a slanted negative extrude recessed into the panel. With the wrap and emboss, i can never select it like I could a normal extrude to do that. For the current panel that’s ok but I wanted a beveled kinda look to the negative extrusion so that it fades into the top surface seamlessly.

Thanks for the help…happy with the final result (call if version 1.0)

After I updated Shapr3D, the projection feature has become really weird. Projecting onto a face doesn’t create a sketch, not sure if it’s a bug.
