Question regarding iPad RAM usage

Hi everyone,

I’m currently using an iPad with 8 GB of RAM, and I’m running into a problem when trying to merge two Shapr3D projects.

The projects are a house and a garage (two separate designs with their drawings). Whenever I try to import one project into the other, Shapr3D simply closes without any error message.

I’m considering upgrading to an iPad Pro M4 (2 TB, 16 GB RAM), but before spending that much money I’d like to know:

Will Shapr3D actually make use of the additional RAM, and is it likely that this would solve my problem?

In other words, is the crash most likely caused by running out of memory, or are there other limitations when merging large projects that would still exist on a 16 GB iPad?

I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with large projects on a 16 GB iPad.

Thanks!

Hi!

I have both an iPad Pro M4 and an iPad mini 6, and on both of them I can import one project into another without any issues. That said, I don’t have projects as large or as complex as yours, so I can’t say whether the hardware is the deciding factor.

If you’re comfortable sharing them, feel free to send me the two projects via DM. I’d be happy to try merging them on both devices and let you know what happens. If it works, I can send the merged project back to you as well. That might save you from buying a new iPad if the issue turns out to be something else.

As for upgrading, I’d probably wait until September if you can. Apple usually announces new iPad models around that time, so even if you still decide to buy an M4, you’ll either have a newer option or potentially get the current model at a better price.

Hi Margriet,

thank you very much for taking the time to reply — and especially for the offer to test the projects on both of your iPads!

Very annoying timing right now, though: for some reason my Discourse login has stopped working, except for this one session that is still active. I can’t log in from either my Mac or my Windows machine :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

On top of that, I’m currently having export issues with the latest Shapr3D version. I’ve been exporting directly to a NAS share since day one, and since the last update that has become rather unreliable as well.

Sometimes I really wonder why I’m putting myself through all this… but when it comes to working on an iPad, Shapr3D is pretty much without an alternative for me at the moment.

Once everything is working properly again, I may well take you up on your offer!

And btw., regarding the (old) M4: I’d really like to get the 2 TB version — and the current model is simply too expensive for me.
