Also had a bit of a chuckle noticing they put Free tier on the LEFT vs right, wouldn’t be surprised if they just get rid of Free Tier.
I have seen loft companies just getting rid of Free tiers.

I’m sad because we all love this product and we’ve been asking for a hobbyist tier for years – something less than $450/year – but there hasn’t been any response other than they’ll do it if they find a way. It seems like it would be simple to have a full-res printing tier with no cloud storage, no contributors allowed, and a limited number of projects for $100/year. But, honestly, after all this time, I don’t think a hobbyist tier will ever be added. I’d love to be proven wrong. My theory is that Shapr3D’s licensing agreement with Parasolid doesn’t allow for it.
No response because most likely plan is to raise the price vs decrease, but just a guess.
Add basic features to the Basic Tier at $38 and increase the Pro Tier.
Knowing subscription model, there is no way a company decrease prices.
Read this thread price only went up.
I think this method of subscription model is quite old school. A good fresh example is Figma they are intentionally keeping the application for free for individuals. But they are charging companies with enterprise mark. When you become a favourite application by individuals than you would feel more comfortable with that too when you’re working for Enterprises. In long-term plant enterprises are also bound to use individual favourite application for performance purposes.
In my opinion shapr3D should be free even for hobbiysts.
Well there are many points from both sides to consider.
They are going to raise the price if they improve it enough to compete with top tier apps. They have to. Right now IMO they are trying to entice the upper echelon of this industry. I get it. But they are pretty far behind. But for the money…
So lets say they add a sheet metal module/ flattening objects and or Nurbs. We’ll want it for free, but that’s a significant upgrade. They are likely going to increase their price. Careful what you wish for?
Giving it free to hobbyists is kind of a good idea. Some of those hobbyists become proficient and get a job in the field and then ask their boss/ company to buy that software. Like what Apple did with schools. Train your future users.
I almost gave up my subscription this month because there are no new features that I feel should be here now. The reason I kept it is because I need to design a case for a circuit board design that I’m going to retail very soon and do not have the time to learn Plasticity at the moment.
I recently purchased Plasticity because it has MANY more of the features above and beyond the ones that are missing in Shapr. It’s more of a hobbyist modeling tool between Shapr and Blender, with hooks to Blender. And it’s 1 time purchase. No subscription. This means if they are not adding new stuff to entice me to keep paying, I still “own” the old stuff that works fine. ![]()
I hate subscriptions for that reason! You pay for the privilege, hoping they will keep improving enough to justify you to keep paying.
Should they have two tiers? I think they would make more money. Maybe a hobby version without variables and history for a reduced price. I have yet to use either of those features. Do I super complex designs that could leverage them? Not at this time. I am dissatisfied with my daily visits to “Announcements” only to find “tweaks”. If they published a road map…
A road map is scary for them to release because then we would really hold their feet to the fire if the releases aren’t timely. Pitch forks and torches! ![]()
I’m just saying there are a lot of things to consider here from both sides.
As good consumers we should poke them to get improvements when it’s called for.
I’m giving Shapr another year. It was close though! Very close.
I am verifying my circuit board design (I don’t have anyone else) and then the artwork is off to the fab for a run of ten I will assemble and test. Waiting for the parts and board blanks to get back I will design my case and marketing, name my co, build a website and then start the process on the first 100 boards IF the cost to produce is marketable. If the product is greeted with enthusiasm, then I will need start looking for an assembly house to turnkey my project and ramp up assembly.
Too much to do to change 3d apps now. Retirement is hard work.
True, but Shapr3d currently is like GarageBand or iMovie for the MAC! ![]()
I hope they upgrade to Logic or Final Cut Pro!
Parametric and Variables are just maintenance tools, can’t help you with creativity!
“…tier with no cloud storage, no contributors allowed…”
Exactly. Not only I don’t need them, I hate cloud storage, I want to be able to do automatic backups of my files without having to export, and saving the file if I’ve made changes that I want to keep, not only because I’ve opened the file to tweak some nonsense to try or learn something. Needing to go to show versions and recuperate the good one is a stupid thing for me. Not everything you do you want to save. I spend more time going to old version than I would pressing a key as a shortcut to save as I go when I’m ready to save.
