I know the cube at the top right obviously allows one to rotate the workspace view, but it stops at fixed intervals; Let’s say I want to remain looking directly down at my object on the Z axis, but I want to rotate the workspace view to some random degree, without going ‘off axis’-- is there a way to do this?
Rotating with just the mouse causes the view to go all ‘freestyle’ and it does not remain directly planar to the workspace. In the graphic app I use, for instance, holding down the Alt key while rotating keeps it so the view doesn’t ‘wobble’ and simply rotates freely while remaining fixed on axis-- as a hail mary I’ve tried rotating holding down Alt or CTRL or Shift etc using Shapr (Windows PC version) but to no avail.
I know I could obviously rotate my bodies instead of the view, but this would create other issues.
As a SpaceMouse owner, I have to say — that’s not entirely correct either. Yes, the SpaceMouse does give you more precise movement, but you still can’t lock rotation around just one axis. (afaik)
So you’re talking about the “Dominant” setting? It does work as a temporary workaround, but having to go into the settings and toggle it on and off every time you want to rotate an object like that is a bit tedious. And keeping it on all the time basically cripples the full potential of the SpaceMouse.

Although, I just checked and noticed that it’s possible to add the toggle to the radial menu. I guess that could be considered a proper solution after all.
I had no idea of what Dominant (on/off) was supposed to do… it works (mapped to space button), but feels extremely strange (as the normal behavior is in my spine. Great suggestions!
I’m probably doing something wrong in my workflow-- but for instance, when I have to sketch on a body to add something or modify it or whatever, I prefer to have the area I need to draw on perpendicular to the bottom of the screen, so things that are straight are either horizontal or vertical, and not off at some angle.
Not sure what you’re asking---- what I meant was that , when I need to sketch on a body to make modifications-- like cutting a slot for instance-- I’d prefer to be able to orient the workspace so that nearby angles are perpendicular or parallel to the screen. In the first image, the slots around the blank area are at an angle, whereas, in the second image, I’ve manually rotated the workspace so that the slots in the area I want to draw are perpendicular to the bottom of the screen.
That being said, since I had to rotate manually with the mouse while trying not to tilt the body at the same time, it’s not ideal.
My initial post was asking if there was a way to lock the body to the Z axis so that, even if I rotate the workspace, it will stay planar to the Z axis.
Actually I understand what you want, what we been discussing is orbiting around objects which was my confusion.
What you want to do is rotate the camera/viewport (canvas) because you prefer not to rotate model. This is possible in Blender since they have Viewport view and Camera view, the camera can be rotated and moved anyway you want.
In Shapr3d we only have these arrows that rotates the viewport, but only 90degrees
A workaround would be possibly project the portion you want to work on, or cut out area you want to work on and rotate to the angle you prefer and align it back original location when your modeling is done.
I guess I must work differently than most, because I find not being able to manually rotate the workspace while remaining on-axis to be very frustrating. But I guess if it was a big issue more users would have raised it and it would have been addressed by now. . . so it must just be a pet peeve on my part
