Printing text in a different colour, without emboss or deboss

Hi all,

I’m creating what is essentially a box, with a text logo printed on one side.

I’ve managed to import the text, and project it onto one of the faces. I projected it using edges (but have also tried it as a sketch just to see what happens).

Once it’s projected on the box, I can emboss / deboss the test, and when I send it to my Bambu P2s printer using Bambu Studio, I can select the emboss or deboss text and re-colour it to a different filament fine.

However, I want the text to be flat on the surface of the box. When I leave the projection on the box without emboss or deboss, and export it, I can’t seem to see or select it in bambu studio.

I’ve tried exporting it as different file types to see if that helps (Step, Stl, and 3mf), but honestly not sure if that’s what the problem is (just early morning trouble shooting idea after a strong coffee…).

Any help would be welcome!

This will export right into Bambu. @ .2mm layer height 5 layers should produce a proper color. Make your letter extrusion height multiples of your layer height. Subtract selecting leave the removed body from the main body.

Alternatively you can bite the bullet and paint the letters in your slicer after having outlined them with edges in shapr. It’s tedious though.@Oregonerd’s way is much easier. You can use the paint bucket tool in your slicer to easily paint the letter inserts. Or use the direct Shapr export to Bambu Studio or Orca slicer. Since the letters and base are separate objects, it will automatically let you assign filaments.

To add to this, you do not have to cut or imprint the text to assign color. You can just extrude the text and align to the top face and give it a different color. But that is more of a Lazy Method. If you just want text on the top layer you can like Kronos pointed out you can use FILL Paint tool and on the same file and that will just add color only on 1 layer.

I had the same problem. When I saw your question, I tried it again. This was my “solution”.

I used Split Body. I selected a letter and used the lithophane as the splitting tool. After that, I could get the letter almost perfectly flush with the surface of the lithophane.

Perhaps there’s a better solution. Let’s wait for the nerds. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Oh, they already did! Sorry!

Hello, thanks for the reply, but I’m sorry I don’t understand what you are describing, sorry!

When you say ‘make your letter extrusion height multiples of your layer height’, wouldn’t this make the letters higher than the original surface?

And when you say ‘subtract selecting leave the removed body’, I’m not sure what this means?

I do appreciated the help  Can you clarify a little further?

Thankyou! I can’t seem to export from Shapr directly to Bambu studio though. What file extension do you export as to get this to work? It won’t recognise the Shapr3d export, so I assume it’s something different?

I managed to paint the letters a different colour in shapr, but they still don’t appear when exported as Step, stl or 3mf

I don’t do videos at this time. Too many projects.

I choose/select the face of my model and tap “sketch”. Using the “text” tool I apply it to the face.

I then select the letter faces and extrude them downward into the body 1mm. My print layer height will be set to .2mm so that means the text will be 5 layers. So each letter is now a body.

I select the letter bodies and subtract them from the main body making sure to set the extrusion to "leave removed bodies.

Select the colors in visualization. and bingo ready to export.

If you are using the latest paid version of Shapr the Bambu export should work.

Thanks for the explanation @Oregonerd, it’s very much appreciated!

While my letters are now bodies, I can’t seem to subtract them from the object they are attached too. It either selects everything blue, or everything in purple.

I am using the education version, so I’m wondering if this is a limitation of that?

If the paid version means I can just colour text without extruding, and just by using Bambu Studio, then that might be worth it. Is that correct?

The first image shows one that was made for me, and the one that I’m currently working on. While I couldn’t do a ‘subtract’, I tried extruding down to 1mm, and using the fill tool with .2mm layers, but you can see it’s still not flat with the surface.

The second image shows me trying a larger text to see if it works, but it still looks a little like spaghtetti..

I do appreciate the help everyone, thankyou!

But if I can’t do the subtract technique, is my only option to pay for the full version rather than use education?

And I guess further to this, would someone just be able to write a word on a cube, and export it as a bambu studio file so I can see how it works in Bambu Studio before buying?

Looking closely at it, I think the text objects seem slightly offset from the base, so they don’t get printed flush on the plate. Check your first layer to see if the text appears in it. Since you’re printing the text on the plate side, it needs to be completely flush to the rest of the object or it will get printed into the air.

To see how the direct export to Bambu Studio or Orca works, check out this thread and look at the video in the announcement: 26.170 - Multicolor Support for Slicer Integrations from Visualization

I don’t know what functions are restricted in the free version, sorry.

PS: clean your print plate, I can see a fingerprint at the bottom right of the right one.

In the subtract operation, the blue bodies will be removed. The purple body(ies) will be taken from by the blue bodies.

Your items side bar is a good place to select bodies.

With the education version you should have all the features I have with the exception of no team collaboration.

I have not tried just coloring the letters. I will and will get back to you on it. I use my method because it treats the letter like components of the main body. I can bevel them to highlight or define sharper edges, stuff like that.

Mostly I design useful stuff, assemblies and avoid multicolor as it is just too wasteful to me. The purge tower can be too much waste for me sometimes. I wish slicers would simply allow to purge all into the body or another useful body. It should be a choice.

This option exists. You can purge into a print’s infill:

I think it still does the tower. Or it used to. No way around it.

Yes, the prime tower is still there.

There’s a number of things you can do to minimize the prime tower’s material use, here’s a few options: Reduce Prime Tower Waste in Bambu Studio - 3DBite

I think there’s also a way to use the “print by object” order to minimize the prime tower, as it will then not print on the tower for all the layers where no color change is needed. I need to read up on that, But I’ve seen people do it.

Alright, apparently it’s called “no sparse layers” in the prime tower settings, however it’s not yet in Bambu Studio. Beta versions of Prusa slicer and Orca already have it. I hope it comes to Bambu soon, it’s quite neat.

Thanks for the article… it’s got a date on it too. I hate articles without dates.

I got distracted so I ditched the idea of color printing until the tool/nozzle changers get better.

My gal pal will want some color print she saw online and I’ll say: "If only I has that 17 color tool changer  ".

I don’t feel bad. She got a new roof a couple years ago, new door on the laundry, new walks to the laundry, I found the rear hatch and fixed her car she crumpled and a complete inside home remodel (Floors, paint and trim). It’s almost done. I do all the dishes, cooking and laundry… so far retirement isn’t so much fun :joy: . I need to get a job just to get some rest.
