Spring design

Hello everyone,

Could someone please help out with a specific requirement regarding a spring design?

I do create a simple spring by using the rotation tool but then want to finish one end on a straight rope. Trying to do so I‘m struggling to create a smooth natural transition. Instead, there’s a edging design that shouldn’t be there. Any idea how to solve this?

Please see pictures attached.

Many thanks,

Jan

Loft with G1/2 continuity?

Thank you for you reply!

No, that‘s not it because i want the straight part going on the axial direction.

Hi
Or use Sweep to continue the spring..

Hi, Jean-Philippe,

I used the sweeping tool to create the ending part but that causes the edging look.

Are you sure?

Cn be adjusted even more…

Here method using 3 part sweep.

If you use a polygon with four or more sides and use the face to draw your curve it will smoothly connect when you project the curve to your cylinder.

Thank you very much! Did you assemble a spring (rotation tool) with an angeled second part using the sweep tool?

By the way (@all): Is it possible to 3D draw lines to use them for sweeping? If so one just could draw a spring with a straight ending and then sweep the whole way…

Ah that’s one nice way too. Much appreciated, too!

No. As I said from the beginning loft is good for that.

Yes. Why not.

That would be much harder then using revolve

I doubt it can be better

Dear both,

thanks again for your input. That’s exactly what I want as result. :+1:

Unfortunately it seems that I’m a much less experienced user than you are. I tried to follow each way explained but couldn’t reach your results.

Would you mind to explain a bit more the essential steps? I much appreciate it

Have a nice day

Nothing really hard to reproduce. All you need is to find right parameters

Hi,
Congratulations on your proposals guys! I like this kind of thread.
Personally I will do it “the old-fashioned way”.
First, create the spring and the rounded angle with tangency constraints so as not to break. All on a single curve. (no bodies, no Revolve)
Second, use this very fluid curve to make a Sweep.
It’s my two cents… But indeed there are several ways to do it.

Theoretically…For the spring body, sweeping on the spiral edge created by a revolve command is the best solution, because the position of the cross section causes the problem, the revolve use vertical cros-section, for the sweep I used “on curve at point”. After that, several steps can follow.

Show us

So this can go in any direction

Irregular part can be drawn on the cylinder.
