Thread Tool

I just had to renew my Shapr license and the thread thing and the inability to import SVGs as directly editable objects makes me definitely feel like I’m in an abusive relationship. I can’t decide if the lack of features or outright hostility to people who are paying them money is the most infuriating.

Another pro user still patiently awaiting modelled threads, still painfully using the revolve tool.

another +1 request for model thread generation. revolving method is painfully tedious and error prone for us mere amateurs.

I ALMOST hit buy on the annual subscription until I saw this. How can you possibly not have a feature like this?

I want to use this for modeling on the go with my iPad and this makes that not possible. Guess I’ll be renewing my f3d subscription…

@Istvan Knock, knock, anyone home at Shapr3D? Over 8000 views and still no thread or gear features in the Shapr3D toolset. The money I pay for my subscription is not for changing colors of sketch lines. It’s for getting essential features needed for actual engineering work, such as threads and gears. If your team can’t handle the development yourself, maybe open up the API and add a plug-in system so the community can do it for you.

I agree. This is getting out of hand and I’m losing my patience. The fact that one of us was able to come up with a thread generator before the shapr dev team is deeply troubling. Where is our money going? Where is our locally processed FEA and Modeled threads? It’s wild that they don’t respond to this thread anymore, pun intended. Shapr needs to step up their game, this is sad to see such a drop in progress from a company that has so much potential.

I would like to add my request for a thread creation tool. I have made threads with Shapr3D using various techniques, but it is tedious and inadequate for precise threads to match ISO standards. Currently I use another tool Fusion360 to make my threaded parts and then import them to Shapr3D. This is problematic for various reasons. I love using Shapr3D because of its capability on my iPad to draw and sketch anywhere, but at this point I’m considering moving to just using the other platform rather than having to pay for 2 systems. I print my parts on a Bambu X1 using ABS and ASA filaments and I get great prints for my threaded parts (mostly GBP metric). Still when I use subtract to make threads in Shapr3D and fit everything together I have to use a slicer tool to fix problems with internal geometry of the parts.

Hey, I would like to hear an update of the threads tool “coming soon”. I seriously can not consider a subscription without this… At least give us a basic verison - length, depth and bolt/nut thats all I seriously need! Pls!

I use Tinkercad, a free online cad tool for kids, to create threads now. Works great.

Freecad has a nice Fasteners Workbench, but most others have it as well.

OMG the UI hasn’t been the main focus in that screenshot.. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Version Zero, released in 2002, and V1.0 just released, took more than 20 years for this new UI, way nicer than before!

Yes please. Every time I have to draw something with threads in I am forced back to Fusion 360. Please implement a thread generator.

I keep wondering if I should cancel my shapr3d subscription because of this omission. I really like the speed of Shapr3d, but its an expense in money and head space to maintain 2 tools, one for drawing things without threads and one for drawings things with them.

My application is 3D printing, and while 3D printed threads are often not useable directly as printed, they are always good enough that they guide the tap in true. If I just print a hole, it’s difficult to get the tap aligned with the axis of the hole to the precision I need.

Any thread can be designed in Shapr3D. I would create a separate project with a parametric thread generator (using variables), and then simply export any thread I need into the current project.

There are also many free tools for thread generation, such as OpenSCAD or FreeCAD. And you can always download the required thread model from https://www.mcmaster.com. I don’t see why you’d need to buy Fusion just for that.

Forgot to mention Freecad is FREE meaning opensource, also works on MAC, LINUX, Windows, oh and FREE!

Actually, I created one in the past, although it lacks the professional knowledge that I don’t have:

So, yes, +1 for thread tool, until that, I‘m using this.

I’m not opposed to a thread tool. I just think there are more important things to work on first. It would be nice to have, but it’s not high on the list.

For example, plugin support could be implemented, and tools like a thread generator would simply appear on their own — along with many other useful features.
