5.440 - User interface refresh

I second this. Switching back and forth quickly was a big part of my workflow.

We’ll put the undo/redo buttons where they were. Thank you for the feedback, community.

Agree. I can accept all other changes but not this. It’s definitely not easy for me to touch those buttons on the top especially I am holding my iPad with my left hand. Move them back PLEASE!!!

Thanks Istvan for listening and taking care of this for us. It’s a credit to you and the team for agreeing to fix it so quickly.

Came here to comment some of the same things. Undo/Redo moving fixes one thing. I’m still unsure how to make the 3 finger gesture work.

I found seeing current grid size to be really helpful when I was zoom in and out and designing. Is there a way to see what the grid is zoomed to?

Still unsure how to test the new historical editing beta. These have pushed me over to learning Fusion 360 again. Just frustrated by needing to change something done to long ago. Hopefully, we have parametric in the future.

Edit: Looks like it is up on how to use Test Flight. Guess I’ll try that.

I got a real shock when I open Shapr3D during a conference call and couldn’t navigate or send files during the call. I know changes need to happen but I would prefer to download it at the appropriate time. I haven’t had any issues with functionality, once I got accustomed to where everything had moved, but today I wanted to add text to my part and when I pressed the continue button, to locate the placement of the text, I couldn’t see the text anywhere. When I press done the text displayed the text, but I couldn’t move it to the correct location. Something happened when relocating this function, and needs fixing. I’m not pleased with the changes to the interface and it has add complexity for me, but that’s just my opinion.

Grid size is out in the latest version - 5.450

Will there eventually be a way to revert back to the old interface or at least have a menu to select optional changes to the UI?

I know the update has only been out for a day and a bit but I’ve found myself purposefully avoiding the app since and have opted to use other software as the flow for many processes has been interrupted or just feels clunky now.
I just want to lay out the current issues and gripes I have until I either get used to the layout or cancel my subscription and change programs as the ease of use was worth the $500AUD before, which I’m losing faith in as my refresh is coming up in a few months.

The issues:
The movement of the undo button and the items tab to the top, and the top center has completely reduced the fluidity from 2-handed use, and have already found myself missing the small icon with the pen only to draw another mistake in the sketch a couple of times now.

The top middle title bar is a nuisance and the lack of the ability to change the title directly from it without having to exit the project, rename the file, and re-enter the project shows that it has no purpose besides taking up screen space when the icons would better belong out of the viewport in the top left or right corner with no title shown (Maybe the title belongs within and at the top of the items tab?).

Shrinking the icons and reducing the clearly laid out options from before has me fat-fingering or repeatedly opening the wrong menu, (I’m sure I’ll get used to it but it’s frustrating at the moment) when the main reason why I used Shapr was that it was more fluid than other software.

The scale is hidden within a menu that I have to tap into and doesn’t stay open as I adjust, which has caused me to open the software and design a sketch in the wrong dimensions only to find out and abandon it due to lack of energy to deal with as you cant easily rescale sketches.
(I understand that that is 100% my fault for not noticing the units that I was designing with, it was just another cause of frustration as I was figuring out the changes).

The items tab and modeling/visualization tab should be separated, the amount of use the items tab has compared to the change from modeling to visualization means it’ll only become a common point of frustration in which when you wish to select or hide a body/sketch only to open the wrong menu.
The items button should be relocated back in the bottom left alongside or above the undo buttons.

The bottom right corner is now completely blank leaving space in which the lesser-used options that you still want to have access to, should be located like the section view and measure tools.
The modeling/visualization menu would be better located down there as well.

I’m sorry for the barrage of negative input, this isn’t a personal attack or disparaging the hard work of the amazing team, and software you have created, I really enjoy using Shapr3d, it has been by far my favourite CAD program for light use, but I’m finding myself now avoiding it for more robust and complicated software as the appeal and flow is lost with the redesign.

Thank you for the detailed feedback, and I’m sorry that the changes disrupted your workflow. We know it’s quite and adjustment for experienced users and we thank you for your patience.

Some of the things you’ve mentioned are going to be fixed in versions coming in the next days and weeks: the grid units will appear on the icon, undo/redo will go back to its original place, we will make the title bar smaller by removing undo/redo and other icons from it and it will be possible to rename the design from there.

There are others we plan to keep as they support upcoming features. One example is keeping the right-hand side of the screen relatively free for now: that will be the place for parametric editing tools. Having a dedicated menu to navigate between modeling, visualization and drawings is also in support of handling increased complexity of designs in the future.

Could you clarify what you mean by “reducing the clearly laid out options”? In theory, the update should’ve only changed the visuals of these options and not what’s available but I might be missing something.

Thank you for your fast response, I really appreciate you taking the time to respond.
I’m really looking forward to the parametric update and what it’ll be capable of.

And sorry for my delayed response I was just checking and reevaluating my use of the program and talking to other users to make sure that my issues are at least worth mentioning and not a personal or irrational issue.

There wasn’t an issue with the reorganization of the tools and options, I found the inclusion of the text feature within the sketch menu, being able to double-tap icons instead of text to change sketch types, and all of the ‘tools’ being located within the tools icon was an amazing addition.
Moving the visualization and drawings button to the top corner outside of the general use area was also a smart move.

(Maybe 3-4mm larger spacing between the icons, and when the text labels are set to ‘hover only’ the icons enlarge or double, which may eliminate the issue, depending on what you guys have planned).

In terms of clarifying the “Reducing the clearly laid out options” remark,
It was more of reducing the size of the icons and bunching them together in a ‘corporate excessive simplification’ style.
They’re placed too close together to be easily used without pausing to look and make sure you didn’t miss the right menu.

I do still believe that keeping the items tab in the top left underneath the modeling/visualisation tab may cause some frustration with those that frequently use it like myself.
Having it around the bottom left around the undo keys allows me to open and sometimes select/hide the correct layer with my off-hand rather than having to reposition my grip in ‘freehand’ with a tablet or reaching across with the pen.
I find it a pain to open the items menu with the pen but not to select the layer or to rename/organise into folders, it’s just the size and how close the icon is to the corner which makes it uncomfortable to access that I’d rather use the pen than my non-dominant hand.

(This one is strange and can be just disregarded as I feel like I’m complaining too much)
In my case I found myself misclicking the visualisation tab, just to tap on the work area to close the pop-out with no issue. (wasn’t the point of frustration)
The counter was when I’d like to switch to the visualization view only to misclick the items menu, to then try to tap on the work area to reduce the menu from the habit of closing the misclicked visual pop-out.
This only caused me to reopen a random sketch or select a body as the items menu is a fixed pop-out.

It’s not a major issue as I will get used to the new UI but having two buttons with different styles of pop-outs so close together was just another negative that I felt was a downgrade from the previous UI.

It may be a few small issues I’m blowing up to seem worse than what they actually are, but from the people I have spoken to in my CAD Facebook groups experiencing similar issues, I do believe the issues I’ve brought forward are being experienced by multiple users and these changes may have a positive effect on the new UI.

Again I’d like to apologise, I understand the sheer amount of effort you and your team put in to provide us with this amazing software, and appreciate the work it takes to develop of bring us these new features and updates.

Thank You for your time and patience with me.

There’s no need to apologize. Without detailed and thoughtful feedback like this is we couldn’t make Shapr3D great and definitely not something anyone would call ‘amazing’. The new UI is something that we will be working on actively for the coming few months for sure, and we are reading all of this feedback and incorporate it in our plans.

I love the new UI and button graphics, but I do agree with the undo/redo button location comments. It really was way more intuitive in the lower left corner. I also don’t understand the reasoning behind the home, cloud and share button being front and center as they are. Those are all actions that are rarely used during a session and would be best suited to pop out from a single button on the left side. They take up very valuable screen real estate, especially when working with large models with lots of constraints.

Finally! I hate having all my socks thrown into one drawer.

With the latest release we’ve moved back the Undo/Redo buttons to the bottom left corner:

Feels cluttered.

Any chance you will also be getting rid of the centre info bar thing that the name and home image ring is on as it takes iPad screen space and is VERY irritating, the redesign is fine I suppose but iPad now has LESS screen real estate compared to before. Or hide it, something. It’s a waste of space having the home icon and file name constantly on my iPad screen.

Hi @Luke2468 , thanks for the feedback. Thanks for your feedback about the center info bar on the iPad. We get the concern about screen space. Right now, we’re keeping the top bar as it is because has important functionality. But we’re always looking to make things better, so we’ll keep your thoughts in mind.

Hi Istvan, thanks for replying, I’m saddened by the thought of keeping it centre stage as it truly is an eye sore and I’m honestly surprised nobody else questions the usefulness of it in comparison to the usefulness of the space it occupies. Everything it currently houses has a minimal use case, I’ll change the name once, or a few times at best, I’ll press home once and the same goes for the share and options buttons. I’d had thought all that functionality would be far better in a sub menu which you access from a button in the top left. I find it irritating as I work exclusively on iPad Pro and design for extensive periods. On another questions, are the tooltips that also pop up when going to have a toggle so I can turn them off? If someone knows all the tools and their uses do we always need to tip box there? Again thanks for the response.

That part of the UI will change with the release of parametric modeling.
